Very fun game but just about done with it

This game is a great game to play. Ive been playing it for almost a year but I am to quit playing it. My progress has plateaued. Like many games out there, its a catch-22. You need high level characters to survive challenges that reward you with rare gear but you need rare gear to upgrade your characters to high enough levels to survive those challenges. I have thrown some money into the game, which I dont mind supporting, but my main team is just about topped off as high as I can get them. My main team is 1 tier-2 5-star character, 1 tier-4 4-star character and 3 tier-3 4-star characters. I can no longer advance in world stages or special events requiring S1 level teams. If it were easier to max out characters as well as obtaining 5-star characters without spending a ton of money, this game would easily be rated 5 stars.
